The Avery County Senior Center hosts a specialized adult day program for persons with memory loss from Alzheimer's Disease or a related disorder. Caregiver's Haven is a small-group program in a comfortable, homelike setting where participants enjoy friendship and meaningful activities. Caregivers get time out for personal needs, etc. The program is therapeutic for participants and helps families keep their loved ones at home.

Day Break is a social model, group respite program for caregivers and their care recipiants. This program is designed to provide care recipiants with opportunities to enjoy social and recreational activities in a safe and secure environment.  Day Break meets three times a week: Tuesdays, from 1-5pm at the Alliance Bible Fellowship, Wednesdays from 1-5pm at Deerfield Ridge Assisted Living, and Fridays, from 10am-2pm at the Boone United Methodist Church.

Many older adults experience a fear of falling. People who develop this fear often limit their activities, which can result in physical weakness, making the risk of falling even greater. A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls is a program designed for empowerment to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults.  A Matter of Balance includes eight two-hour sessions for a small group led by a trained facilitator.

Get Up & Go is a falls prevention and awareness event, geared towards older adults and caregivers. You will learn safe ways to get up from a fall and how to assist others with getting up from a fall.  Additional information will be shareed about life alert systems, falls prevention  education and recovery. Presentations will begin at 9am, with fall risk screenings and agency expo beginning at 11am.

 Prevent Falls in 2016.

The 9th annual Falls Prevention Awareness Day (FPAD) will be observed on September 22, 2016—the first day of fall. The event raises awareness about how to prevent fall-related injuries among older adults. The theme of this year’s event is  Ready, Steady, Balance: Prevent Falls in 2016

Join us on Wednesday, September 21st from 9-11am for a Building Better Balance Falls Risk Screening.  The screening will help raise awareness among older adults about the prevalence of falls and how to prevent them.  We will also connect participants with community resources and provide tools for discussion with healthcare providers.  After the screening is complete, we will lead the group through a short Tai Chi session.

The Alleghany Wellness Center and Alleghany Council on Aging are co-hosting "Senior Day" events the first Friday of every month from 10am to 12 noon.  Activities for all abilities will be offered and lunch served.  There is no charge for the event, but participants are encouraged to consider membership options at the wellness center to enhance their own personal fitness and health.

Join us for a free screening and discussion of the PBS FRONTLINE film, Being Mortal. Based on the best-selling book by Atul Gawande, MD, this documentary explores the hopes of patients and families facing terminal illness and their relationships with the physicians who treat them. The prgram will last from 1-2:30pm, with registration opening at 12:30pm, at the Blue Ridge Electric Community Room on Hwy 421 in Boone, NC.
